Course Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Understand the principles of virtual production and how LED video walls are used in filmmaking.
  • Understand why global shutter cameras are important when shooting LED screens.
  • Set up and operate a camera for LED wall production.
  • Understand how to light subjects in front of an LED screen and balance foreground and background exposure.
  • Select appropriate focal lengths and camera positions to create convincing perspective and depth.
  • Understand how camera movement and lens choice interact with a virtual environment.
  • Identify common challenges when shooting against LED walls, including moiré, flicker, reflections and colour contamination.
  • Create and prepare AI-generated backgrounds specifically for use in virtual production.
  • Develop an understanding of how AI-generated imagery, VFX and live-action cinematography can work together.
  • Work as part of a production team to plan and execute a virtual studio shoot.
  • Apply the complete workflow, from creating a digital environment to lighting, camera setup and shooting a scene on an LED wall.
  • Gain practical experience that can be applied to film, commercials, music videos, corporate content and other productions using virtual environments.

    Virtual Studio & LED Video Wall Filmmaking

    Step into the future of filmmaking and discover how LED video walls, virtual studios and AI-generated environments are changing the way films, commercials and video content are produced.

    This hands-on course at the Cape Town School of Photography introduces filmmakers to the practical and creative principles behind shooting in a virtual studio environment. Students will learn how to combine real-world cinematography with digital backgrounds to create convincing, cinematic environments without the limitations of traditional locations.

     

    What You’ll Learn

    Students will explore the key techniques required to shoot successfully against an LED video wall, including:

    • Working with global shutter cameras and understanding why camera technology matters when shooting LED screens.
    • Lighting for LED environments, including balancing foreground subjects with the brightness, colour and exposure of the virtual background.
    • Matching focal lengths between the camera and virtual environment to create convincing perspective and scale.
    • Understanding the relationship between camera position, lens choice and the virtual background.
    • Creating bespoke virtual environments using AI imaging technology.
    • Preparing and designing backgrounds specifically for use on an LED wall.
    • Understanding the creative possibilities and limitations of virtual production and in-camera VFX.
    • Applying the techniques in a practical group trial production, taking an idea from virtual background creation through to camera and lighting setup and final shoot.

    This course is aimed at creatives who already have some practical experience with cameras and filmmaking and want to explore the possibilities of virtual production.

    It is particularly suited to:

    Filmmakers and cinematographers who want to expand their shooting skills into LED and virtual studio environments.

    Content creators and directors interested in creating controlled, cinematic environments without relying entirely on physical locations.

    AI image creators who want to understand how their generated environments can be turned into practical filmmaking backgrounds.

    VFX artists and digital creatives who have an interest in working with cameras and understanding how their digital environments interact with real-world cinematography.

     

    The Practical Experience

    The course culminates in a group trial production, giving students the opportunity to put the theory into practice. Working together, students will develop an AI-generated environment, prepare it for the LED wall, establish the camera and lighting setup, and shoot a short scene inside the virtual studio.

    The result is an introduction to a new filmmaking workflow where camera, lighting, AI, VFX and virtual environments come together on set.

    No previous virtual production experience is required — just a working knowledge of filmmaking or camera operation and an interest in exploring what’s next in visual storytelling.
