Sensor and image processor features:
Full Frame Stacked BSI 24.2-megapixel sensor with gapless on-chip architecture
The sensor in the Sony A9 II combines a backside illumination and gapless on-chip architecture to provide supreme imaging capabilities. Additionally, the sensor features a resolution of 24.2 megapixels, and will enable you to create large prints, even after cropping.
Stacked sensor design with integral memory
The Sony a9 II Full-frame Mirrorless Camera is the first full-frame sensor camera to use a high-speed stacked sensor design. This design features integral memory, enabling the sensor to temporarily store large volumes of data for an overall 20 times faster readout speed. This provides many benefits including: faster continuous/burst shooting, virtually no blackout on the electronic viewfinder, and substantially less rolling shutter when using electronic shutter.
Outstanding low light compatibility: ISO 50-204800
A wide ISO range of 50-204800 gives the Sony Alpha A9 II mirrorless camera the power and flexibility to shoot in almost any light condition. When shooting at the top end of the ISO range you will be able to capture sharp images in indoor, night, and low light conditions, while at ISO 50 you will be able to stop down on shutter speed and/or aperture for creative effects.
High-speed BIONZ X image processing engine
Achieving processing speed beyond the previous model, the Sony BIONZ X image processing engine is optimized for speed to reliably capture fast-moving subjects and realized continuous shooting of up to 20fps. The engine features a newly developed image-processing algorithm, so you can capture high-quality images with less noise all across the sensitivity range while maintaining natural details, a faster AF speed and for an enhanced battery life.
Uncompressed 14-bit RAW
Uncompressed 14-bit RAW format is supported, and it or the current compressed RAW format can be selected as required. Uncompressed 14-bit RAW is a good choice in situations where the sensor's wide dynamic range and fine gradation reproduction will benefit the images being captured.
Autofocus and camera performance features:
High-speed continuous shooting at up to 20fps
The Alpha A9 II camera features a groundbreaking 20fps continuous shooting burst rate with full autofocus and exposure tracking, a first for a full-frame camera. Stunning high-speed performance and ample buffer let you capture the exact decisive moment.
4D Autofocus Focus
With advanced algorithms incorporated into the Sony Alpha a9 II Camera, such as 4D Focus - simply means that it will deliver accurate subject detection, reliable fast autofocusing, and continuous tracking of fast-moving subjects. You'll also be able to cover a Wide AF area of 93%, from 693 focal-plane phase-detection AF points that track random subject motion.
Blackout-free shooting
Thanks to the non-mechanical electronic shutter system, you can observe the reality of what you're shooting through the electronic viewfinder even during continuous shooting, without blackout interruption that typically occurs among optical viewfinders due to up-and-down mirror motion. Enhanced speed of the image sensor eliminates distracting EVF display lag in continuous shooting, so that you can compose images with natural comfort.
AF/AE calculations up to 60 times/sec.
The Sony A9 II calculates autofocus and auto exposure at up to 60 times per second, all virtually uninterrupted, not only while composing but also when releasing the shutter.
Silent, vibration-free electronic shutter with speeds up to 1/32000 sec
Electronic shutter speeds up to 1/32000 sec. far surpass mechanical shutters for a new imaging expression. Not only will these fast speeds enable freezing super-fast subjects; but also shooting at a shallow depth of field without an ND filter, even under bright conditions. Additionally, shooting with the electronic shutter produces no mechanical shutter sound or vibration, and rolling shutter is greatly reduced thanks to the 20% faster readout speed of the new stacked sensor design.
Swift, accurate, and reliable autofocus with 693 points
The Sony Alpha A9 II features 693 phase-detection AF points that covers approximately 93% of the image area. These points are all precise, virtually unfailing, able to focus at EV -3, and with swift reaction to fast motion for consistent tracking in continuous shooting.
Enhanced Eye AF
Eye AF on the Sony Alpha 9 II can capture intriguing facial expressions with enhanced accuracy through 30% improved precision of eye detection. This enhanced feature automatically focuses on and even tracks focus on a subject's eye as the face moves or turns to a 3/4 view, extending your freedom to frame a great shot.
Video features:
Full frame internal 4K video recording with no pixel binning
The Sony Alpha A9 II can record UHD 4K videos onto a SD card, all with full-pixel readout, and no pixel binning. This oversampling process plus full-frame pixel readout without binning results in the highest possible 4K movie image quality. Furthermore, the high speed of the newly developed image sensor reduces the rolling shutter effect.
XAVC S for high-bitrate recording
XAVC S format is used for 4K and HD recording. High bitrates of up to 100Mbps for 4K 30p (25p)/24p recording, and up to 50Mbps for full-HD 60p (50p)/30p (25p)/24p recording, ensure beautifully detailed movies with minimal compression noise. Since 100Mbps recording is possible even at the highest 120fps in full-HD, high-quality slow-motion sequences can be created during post processing.
5-axis image stabilization
A new body-integrated mechanical 5-axis image stabilization unit offers a 5.0-stop shutter speed advantage for stills and helps to smooth-out handheld videos. The live-view monitor image is also stabilized, so you can compose images easily even when shooting a fast-moving subject.
Zebra pattern
Avoid blown highlights and simplify exposure with Zebra. Target video brightness from 0-109%, set +10% and -10% range, check zebra pattern for areas in range, and see minimum brightness.
Improved Fast Hybrid AF for movie shooting
Keep images sharp and clear in shooting 4K movies. Fast Hybrid AF for movie recording has evolved and its AF area has been extended to nearly the same width as that for stills, enabling high-speed high-precision AF throughout the frame. Also, further reduction of speed at the "low" end of AF speed enables more pronounced slow focus effects.
Other features:
New battery with longer runtime
The newly developed NP-FZ100 battery offers approximately twice the life of the previous NP-FW50. The new battery will enable users to capture up to approx. 500 still frames when using the viewfinder and approx. 690 stills when utilising the LCD monitor, or record up to 195 minutes of video on one charge .
Quad-VGA OLED Tru-Finder™
A new high-resolution 3686k-dot electronic viewfinder (EVF) displays a clear image with exceptional detail. The EVF features the legendary ZEISS® T coating to greatly reduce reflections, while a fluorine coating on the outermost lens provides improved protection from dirt. Additionally, the electronic viewfinder features a 120fps frame rate allows you to easily track a subject in fast motion.
Dual slots for convenient data management
The Sony A9 II features two recording media slots, one for SD cards (UHS-II compliant), and one for SD/Memory Stick cards. Still or movie data can be simultaneously recorded to both cards for backup, or RAW/JPEG images or stills/movies can be recorded to different cards. Data can also be copied between cards.
3" tilting Touch screen
The 3.0-type high-resolution 1440k-dot LCD on the A9 II comes with touch control, flexible tilt, and WhiteMagic™ for a clear view in outdoor brightness.
Touch screen autofocus
Use Touch Focus function freely to select an AF point and focus point changes on a desired spot by touching on screen in stills and movies.
Drive and focus mode dials
You can directly select a desired drive mode or a focus mode without accessing menus. Lockable dials prevent unwanted mode changes in use.
High-rigidity mount
The number of screws securing the lens mount has been increased from four to six in order to maximize rigidity, ensuring durability for heavy telephoto lens use.
